How many people reading this article are home business owners? Raise your hand. Okay, I can see there are quite a few of you. Unfortunately, I already know without seeing a show of hands that there are several home business owners out there who feel that the only way to get targeted visitors to their website, is to spend hundreds, or even thousands of dollars on advertising. I am here to show you why this is false.

This might be a new concept to you, but the truth is that there are several methods of getting targeted traffic to your website which will cost you nothing. This article will focus on one such method. This is the method of consistently updating the content of your website with information relevant to your subject of interest. Doing this will attract the search engines, and their visitors.

Often times I read the fallacy that “meta tags” are what attract the search engines to your website. Not true. Don’t get me wrong. Every website owner should use meta tags on their website, as they are relevant. However, the number one thing that search engines are looking for is information in the form of content. Websites with more unique content on a specific topic will receive more search engine traffic for queries related to that topic.

Having said all of that, it is important that the content of your website is relevant to the terms for which you are attempting to rank. In essence, you must utilize the keywords and/or key phrases which you are targeting throughout the content of your website. Specifically, you should use the targeted keyword in the first sentence of your content, as well as the last paragraph, and a couple of times within the body. Just make sure that you do not overdo it. This is what is commonly known as “keyword stuffing”. If the search engines find you guilty of this, you run the risk of them penalizing your website.

Many people are probably reading this article and thinking that there is no way that they can constantly change the content on the front page of their website. This content directly conveys the message of your home business, and displays the call to action. To all of you, I say no problem. This is where a blog comes in handy. As you may have noticed, more and more websites have a blog link at the bottom. The reason for this is so that the webmaster can frequently update the content of the website, thus attracting visitors, while keeping the content on the home page static.

How much unique content your website will require will depend in large part on the subject matter of your website. For instance, if you are targeting a niche market with average competition, you should be able to do very well. However, if you are targeting a broad market which is highly saturated, chances are that you are going to need a great deal of content to get noticed by the search engines.

I know what you are thinking. This sounds like a lot of work. Believe me, once you get into the habit of updating your content each day, there is really nothing to it. Generally, people maintain websites in an area of expertise or familiarity. Just write what you know about. It will more than likely take you 20-30 minutes per day. Before long, you will have creating a following which continues to grow.

For those of you who simply do not have 20-30 minutes to spare each day, there is a solution. You will have no problem finding a freelance writing to do the job for you.

Just recognize that once you have people coming to your website or subscribing to your RSS feed for new information on your topic of interest, these people will look at you as a trusted source. People like to buy from those who they trust. Hence, your readers are your future customers.
