A new trend has emerged in baby shower gifts and it is called diaper cakes. The diaper cake patterns used for these items vary in themes and colors that are added. To put one together all someone needs is diapers, baby bottle, bottle of baby powder, ribbon and baby accessories if adding them to the cake. You will also need a flat base to put everything on and rubber bands to secure the diapers in a circle.
Size and styles can range from very simple to a more intricate tiered cake. These cakes are the hit of the parties that they are done for. Deciding on the size and shape is the first step. After that it is time to build the base and inner structure of the cake. Adding things to the cake is just as fun as seeing the mom to be presented with it.
You can have pretty ribbons for decoration, top them with toys and fill them with lots of different baby items such as baby powder, baby bottles, washcloths, baby socks and much more. All the essentials that a new mother will need can be put into the middle of one of these very unique gifts.
Assembly starts with taking a flat base and putting a baby powder bottle in the middle. This will provide a inner structure on which you can wrap the diapers around. You’ll want to lay the diapers flat and then roll them into tube shapes secured closed with a rubber band. The bottom layer will need a total of three rings to provide a strong base.
Step two is to attach the baby bottle onto the top of powder bottle to form an additional inner structure. Repeating the rolling of the diapers and securing them about the bottle is next. This particular layer will need a total of two rings. For the last layer; repeat all steps and form a singular ring. All rings should be held together with either rubber bands or string.
It is personal choice regarding what medium is used to cover the rubber bands and help in completing a polished look. Decorated craft paper will work and so will ribbon. If using paper make sure to cut it into strips that are two inches wide. This will allow it to cover the bands but not be to big and take over each layer.
Play around with the other decorations that are put onto the cake. Buttons, cupcake toppers, small toys, and letters are easy to work with and can be found in various colors, shapes and sizes. When attaching these things to the diaper cake glue dots need to be used. This allows for a secure attachment and no damage to the diapers. Add a cute stuffed animal or other decoration to the top and you’re all finished.
There are some fun and unique diaper cake patterns that you may be interested in right now. We would love to tell you some cool washcloth favors to try.

As far as party planning goes, the tableware issue always pops up, shall we use the disposable tableware or not? This issue appears particularly in planning baby showers wherein getting the green light from the future mom to use disposable baby shower tableware is crucial.
Some people are okay with using disposable utensils during a party. On the other end of the spectrum, you have people who are opposed to using plastic spoons, forks and knives. To help you decide, here are some things to consider.
Pros of Disposable Tableware
First pro to consider is the cleaning time. Using disposable tableware during the party cuts your clean-up time considerably once the celebration is done. Your choice of plastic tableware could be plain or fancy, but once everyone has left it’s the person in charge of the cleaning who will be stuck with the tedious job of tidying up the place and make sure all traces of the party are gone. With your choice of plastic tableware, there is no need for washing as these can go the recycling bin right away.
Second thing to take into account is the party theme. Plastic tableware comes in a plethora of colors some of which are sure to fit your chosen theme perfectly like Disney’s Little Mermaid which calls for some funky green, blue, yellow and red cutlery that only the disposable plastic kind can deliver.
And thirdly, disposable tableware is inexpensive.
Cons of Disposable Tableware
Number one on this list is the environmental concerns some folks may have, especially as people become more environmentally aware. If your guests are environmentally conscious people, then using regular dishes might be a good idea to consider.
Next point is some of these cheap utensils are not too sturdy. Sometimes the plastic prongs on forks can break off into the food and if people are not careful, then these parts can be ingested. Also, it is sometimes harder to use plastic utensils than silverware to eat with.
Ultimately, whether you use disposable tableware or not is up to you. If the thought of cleaning up afterward is stressing you, then by all means go ahead with the disposables. For smaller parties, regular dishes will do just fine.
If children are present, an adult can be asked to keep an eye of the little ones who aren’t quite used to feeding themselves yet to make sure they don’t break their plastic forks and spoons in their food. Also, remind the older children to be careful lest they become too excited and start running around with plastic forks and knives.
What ever your party plans, don’t dwell too much on the tableware issue as the constant worrying might dampen your mood. Talk to the other people that are planning the party with you and decide on which is the best choice for your party.

There is a lot to consider when getting ready to plan a baby shower. It might be a good idea to prepare a checklist to make sure everything is covered. Five main things one should consider when planning a shower is the guest list, food/menu, registry, games and decorations. It would be good to come up with a theme for the shower whether it’s “Pretty in Pink”, “It’s a Boy”, teddy bear, all white or specific colors that mom really likes.
After the date of the shower has been set one should compile a guest list. The planner(s) should decide on a number of guests and whether it will be co-ed or for women only. Some people have showers that consist of couples while others may just be women and small children. A location for the party also has to be decided. Will the shower be held at someone’s home or in a restaurant or a church? A lot of baby showers are hosted by a relative or friend.
Now that the location and guest list have been decided on next comes the menu. Food can really make or break a party and it’s no different with a baby shower. Of course everyone comes to celebrate with mommy the soon arrival of her new bundle of joy but it’s good to please the guests’ tastebuds too. Will the party be formal? Will it be catered? Should it be potluck-style? There could be a buffet. There could be just fruits, veggies and cheese; or select friends could each bring a dish. Whatever the case, a menu should be arranged well in advance. Also a cake or cupcakes would be nice congratulating the parents. Baby’s name or a message could be written on the cake while cupcakes could just have cute decoration in harmony with the party theme. If not, a couple of sweet desserts should definitely be served.
Invitations also play a major role in planning a baby shower. Besides, how will people know to attend if they receive no invitation. Cute simple invitations are sold at party stores or even the grocery store. With advanced technology many use eVites now to just have shower invitations e-mailed to guests and RSVP online. Photos can be uploaded and customized messages all for free. Everything is done digitally. Both methods can work but it’s important to have a count of those who will and will not be attending so you can be prepared with enough food and party favors.
A couple of weeks prior mail off invitations with directions to the event. You can also start purchasing decorations and party favors. By this time the menu should be finalized and you can also order the cake if you wish but that can be probably done the week of. Some of the decorations you might consider purchasing include: a welcome sign, confetti, balloons, centerpieces hanging or wall decorations, table cover if necessary, streamer, napkins, plates and utensils. You would have already decided on a theme so everything should be in sync with that theme. Around this time party games and prizes can also be bought.
During the days leading up to the party you should make sure the camera is charged and has memory clear. Purchase flowers if necessary, wrap prizes and gifts, and make sure the house or party area is clean. You might even like to have some background music so be sure that the necessary equipment is working properly. You are sure to have an awesome baby shower with the right planning and preparation. Gifts for your mommy-to-be as well as some party decor and prizes can all be purchased at Babies R Us.
