Most parents love their children above all else, but at the same time find parenting to be a real challenge much of the time. As you attempt to sort out the various situations that come up between parents and children, the following suggestions can come in handy.
Of all of the hundreds of studies that have been done, it has been shown that lack of involvement with your kids is the worst thing that you can do, even over being too strict or overly permissive.
It is important to always participate in your child’s life because it is this interaction that allows them to go further than they could have if you had not been there. Getting to wrapped up in your own life, and ignoring the lives of your children, can be detrimental to them so you need to find a way to make their life interact with yours. You can show your children that you are there for them by making small efforts to participate in events that they are doing, or just take time out of your day to have a talk with them. Children always pick up much of their behavior from watching their parents, as you are their first role models in life. Parents must, therefore, exhibit the kind of values they expect their children to take on. If you frequently swear around the house but tell your kids to watch their language, you won’t have much hope of influencing them the way you want. Children will always pay more attention to your actions than your words, so try to be as consistent as possible. Children tend to emulate their parents in important ways, more than they usually realize. So remember that the old saying that actions speak louder than words is true.
The reason you need to do this is that if you respond in an angry way, it is not going to help the predicament. As always, a rational levelheaded person will always deal with situations much better than those lost in anger.
To be more effective, it is best to control your temper, and address your children with a calmer disposition. If you can take those few moments to center yourself, you will be able to handle the situation just fine.
To be a successful parent, you need to stop trying to organize every moment of your child’s life as if their life depended on it. This isn’t a good idea, as you want your child to develop some degree of creativity and self-sufficiency. We are not saying that you must let them have run of the house, but you need to also let them do things on their own like play games or even set an occasional schedule. Even if your kids only get to go to the park once a week, or run around outside in the backyard through the sprinkler, it is breaking up the monotony that usually pervades their lives. By doing this, your kids will appreciate you later on in life as they become more mature. As you begin to raise your child, you will notice personality differences and you will learn how to interact with each other everyday. Some children need more discipline, while others have more self control. What you end up doing is taking a parenting skill that you want to learn and molding it to conform with the personalities of your children.

Trying to determine what position your baby should sleep in can be a very confusing task. Over the years, we’ve been told many different things about sleeping positions for babies. Keep reading to know the scoop.
A common practice for babies years ago is letting them sleep on their stomachs. And, there was good reason – babies sleep more soundly on their tummies than in any other position. Most of us were also put to sleep on our stomachs without any problems, right?
Now, however, we have a little more information. Putting your baby to sleep on her back or side can reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) by as much as 50 percent. This means that putting your baby to sleep on her back from the beginning is what most pediatricians will recommend. For a few years, doctors have also recommended that babies sleep on their sides because not only does this reduce the risk of SIDS, the risk that the child might choke on her vomit if she spits up, which is quite rare, can be reduced as well. But doctors today would say that sleeping on the back or the side is fine since keeping a newborn on her side can be a difficult task.
If your baby fusses a lot when sleeping on her back, try swaddling her, or try putting her on her side with a rolled up blanket for support. Doing this is enough to make many babies feel comfortable. Do be sure to give your baby some waking time on her tummy if your baby is sleeping on her back in order to help with muscle development and to give her a new perspective to life.
Now, all that said, if your baby is really having a hard time sleeping on her back, talk to your pediatrician about having the baby sleep on her stomach. As long as the mattress is firm and the baby is healthy, then your doctor may say that it’s okay to put her to sleep on her stomach. In addition, babies with respiratory problems, upper airway malformations, and babies who spit up a lot, may actually be safer on their tummies.
Remember that each baby is different so you should treat them as such. You should evaluate your baby and her sleeping habits individually with your doctor’s help even though sleeping on the back is the guideline. Keep in mind that your baby will begin turning over in a few months and she will choose her favorite position on her own.

Every boy wants a model electric train set and every father wants him to have one as well. I am not talking about the toy train sets that families like to have running around the Christmas tree, I mean proper train sets that can be extended and built upon – train sets that you can grow fanatical about and some people do, don’t they?
Some people’s childhood enthusiasm for model electric train sets becomes a life-long adult passion. This is why some of the original model electric train sets are so expensive. After all, few children could afford the prices that some early model electric train sets command.
One model electric train set manufacturer whose products are the top of the tree with the best of them is the German company Maerklin, which began producing clockwork model trains and expandable track in 1891.
Maerklin had produced dolls’ houses first of all, but they soon realized that the model train set enthusiast might be like a dolls’ house owner. That is that they might want to add to their collection after their initial purchase. Therefore, Maerklin offered basic model train sets but with a whole range of accessories that could be added on later.
Maerklin model electric train sets come in a selection of scales and gauges, many of which Maerklin itself defined as international standards. For instance, in 1891 Maerklin introduced the 1-5 gauge at the Leipzig Toy Fair and it was quickly adopted as the world’s standard gauge for model train sets.
It followed this up with the O gauge somewhere between 1895 and 1901; the HO scale in 1935 and the Z scale in 1972. These days, however, current Maerklin model electric train sets are only available in Gauge 1, HO scale and Z scale.
These days it is very difficult and very expensive to get hold of earlier examples of Maerklin model electric train sets. In 2005, burglars broke into the Maerklin museum in Goeppingen and stole 100 pieces of Maerklin trains and accessories – a value of 1,000,000 Euros was placed on the haul.
They were later recovered in 2005. In Philadelphia, USA, a complete Maerklin train station and accessories was sold at an international auction for $110,000, in spite of the fact that it was thought that the final selling price would be in the region of $30,000.
Maerklin were truly one of the world’s top innovators in the model electric train set market for about a hundred years, but the company has fallen on difficult times. It filed for insolvency in Germany in February 2009, although a year and a day later, it returned to profitability.
In the 150 years since its foundation as a company, Maerklin has usually been at the forefront of the ideas and technology in its field. Even today, Maerklin is still the world leader for all important scales in the model railroad market, since no other current day manufacturer offers collectors the possibility of adding to existing railtracks and collections.
If you are eager to own some early Maerklin trains or accessories, you can look on Ebay, they do crop up every now and again, but do not presume to find yourself a good deal, the earlier model electric trains were all hand-painted in great detail and they rarely sell for less than $25,000.
Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on a lot of subjects, but is currently concerned with train sets for kids. If you would like to know more about train sets for kids, please go over to our website for some special offers.

A name is perhaps the most precious thing you will give to your baby apart from life itself. Sociologists, baby experts and teachers agree that your child’s name impacts on his or her personality, baby’s ability to interact with his or her peers, and how he or she is seen by total strangers. When choosing your baby’s name, here are a few things you should take into account.
Uniqueness. Giving your baby an unusual name or a traditional name with different spelling is the current fashion in order for her to stand out from the crowd. Say that you have a friend whose daughter’s name is Emily. At school there are 2 other Emilys in the class, so she is known as Emily T. It was a year before the little girl understood that her name was Emily and not Emily T! Because of this, the temptation of going for a name that’s different is easy to understand.
There could be problems as well. The name will be mispronounced or even misspelled. For example, “A person with the name is Elvira, but children and teachers would make it Elmira, Olivia, Alvera. Responding to whatever sounded like her name is what that person will eventually come to learn. What about Sound and Compatibility? Someone suggested that, before you finally decide on a name, you go into the garden and shout the name five times to see how it sounds! It is important to ensure that the name sounds right even though it might be a bit drastic.
If the last name starts with a vowel, then the general rule is to avoid a name that ends with a vowel since the names tend to run together. If the surname is long, you should also choose a short first name and vice versa.
The puns should also be avoided. For example, Hazel Nutt or other names that when combined with the last name have a specific meaning. Even Rosie Bottom! (If you are reading this in the USA, Canada, or anywhere but in the UK, you may be wondering why that should be amusing – well, it translates as ‘Rosie Butt’!)
Don’t forget the initials. This one is obvious but there are still some people who miss this one. Spell out the initials of the first, middle and last names to see if that makes a word.
Finally, you should also consider if the name would suit a grown-up as well as a child.
