Trying to determine what position your baby should sleep in can be a very confusing task. Over the years, we’ve been told many different things about sleeping positions for babies. Keep reading to know the scoop.
A common practice for babies years ago is letting them sleep on their stomachs. And, there was good reason – babies sleep more soundly on their tummies than in any other position. Most of us were also put to sleep on our stomachs without any problems, right?
Now, however, we have a little more information. Putting your baby to sleep on her back or side can reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) by as much as 50 percent. This means that putting your baby to sleep on her back from the beginning is what most pediatricians will recommend. For a few years, doctors have also recommended that babies sleep on their sides because not only does this reduce the risk of SIDS, the risk that the child might choke on her vomit if she spits up, which is quite rare, can be reduced as well. But doctors today would say that sleeping on the back or the side is fine since keeping a newborn on her side can be a difficult task.
If your baby fusses a lot when sleeping on her back, try swaddling her, or try putting her on her side with a rolled up blanket for support. Doing this is enough to make many babies feel comfortable. Do be sure to give your baby some waking time on her tummy if your baby is sleeping on her back in order to help with muscle development and to give her a new perspective to life.
Now, all that said, if your baby is really having a hard time sleeping on her back, talk to your pediatrician about having the baby sleep on her stomach. As long as the mattress is firm and the baby is healthy, then your doctor may say that it’s okay to put her to sleep on her stomach. In addition, babies with respiratory problems, upper airway malformations, and babies who spit up a lot, may actually be safer on their tummies.
Remember that each baby is different so you should treat them as such. You should evaluate your baby and her sleeping habits individually with your doctor’s help even though sleeping on the back is the guideline. Don’t forget the initials. This one is obvious but there are still some people who miss this one. Spell out the initials of the first, middle and last names to see if that makes a word.

Bathing a newborn baby can be a traumatic event for a first time Mom. Newborns can seem so fragile, and wet, slippery ones downright frightening. The tub should be filled and the temperature checked before you put the baby in.

It is usually by surprise that we come upon the second Sunday in May. And in some instances, it is forgotten as being the day when we celebrate Mother’s day. Disciplining a young child using the time out method can be very effective, and will work with children as young as 18-24 months old. If parents use this method of discipline, then they’re letting the child sit quietly alone after misbehaving and they wouldn’t have to get angry or agitated with the child.
Designate an appropriate area in the house where the child is isolated from interacting with others. It can be a corner in their bedroom, a space on the kitchen floor or a special chair that’s labeled specifically for time outs. It’s important for the length to be age appropriate.
Don’t forget that the length must be appropriate for the child’s age. A good rule of thumb is generally one minute per year of age. A kitchen timer is helpful in counting down your child’s punishment time.
Toddlers are given the chance to regroup and calm down wit time out. It’s doubtful they will sit completely still, and they should not be forced to try. All children should be asked in a firm but pleasant tone to complete a designated task or stop an undesired behavior. If their behavior persists, they should be verbally directed to behave once again, with eye contact being made and the time out spot pointed out. If their behavior persists even after this warning, then what you need to do is escort them to the`time out location and tell them the reason why you’re sending them there. Maintain a calm but firm tone with them. You need to discuss with the child why they were sent there once they’ve quietly served their time in the time out location and tell them that they will once again be sent to time out if the behavior occurs again. Older children should then agree to do what you told him to do or cease misbehaving. If children leave their time out location before their time is up, then they need to be aware that the result would be losing the privileges.
It’s likely that your time out method will have to be modified to fit the temperament of your child and your own parenting style. Positive behavior is something you need to reinforce with praises, hugs, and smiles. Outside the home like in grocery stores, shopping centers, or restaurants are where time out can be successfully used. Time out will be enforced if they misbehave while they’re there and emphasizing this to the child is extremely important. Consistency is a must so if the child does misbehave while they’re in the store, then you should place them in time out. Otherwise, they’ll think you’re inconsistent and as a result, they would probably test your boundaries.
