Wal-Mart is a large department store, popular in the United States as a “go to” for most grocery, clothing, and home product needs. Salaries in the company can range from the small to the grand. Benefits, work conditions, and otherwise also differ based on position.
Some managers at Wal-Mart will be making an hourly wage, while others will be making a salary wage. It largely depends upon the area the Wal-Mart serves, your abilities, and the title that you are applying for. Those in charge of a department, such as electronics, will make around $10 each hour. Pay raises for these individuals are usually fairly bleak, even for large Wal-Mart department stores.
The benefits that Wal-Mart employees get is one plus to consider. Managers get a nice benefits package that includes health, dental, and life insurance. The rates and details vary from one year to the next, but in general you are in good hands when working with Wal-Mart. Expect an experienced manager to earn about $50,000 if they are still not promoted to upper level management.
The people that take home the bacon are the pharmacists. Because of their long training and school costs, they are given quite a bit of money if they are able to do their job well. Wal-Mart is famous for giving college students entry-level work. Even at the entry level position, pharmacists can enjoy $50,000 to $100,000 just starting out, depending on experience. And of course, the pharmacy manager will be making quite a bit more in bonuses and benefits.
Being a supervisor does have its merits. For one, the pay level will be better than the average Wal-Mart job, coming in at around $16 for each hour. The supervisor does have a lot of responsibility to take up, however. Supervisors must make sure the store is running like a well oiled machine, despite all the problems that can arise. Supervisors are often promoted to higher levels of management if their history and performance are considered to be excellent.
Wal-Mart has some great prices on their inventory. That’s why Wal-Mart employees are so pleased to get an additional percent off of each item in the store with their Wal-Mart employee card. The discount might only be about 10% or so for most items, but it’s enough to amount to a substantial amount of money over a year. Unfortunately, the discount card doesn’t work for all items that have low markup rates already applied to them.
Final Thoughts
Wal-Mart employment is fun, since you will be interacting with customers all day and working with a great team of people. The Wal-Mart hiring process is a long one, so be prepared to go through interviews and be aware of your salary requirements before thinking of applying.
