How Sealing a Window Can Contain Your Environment

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

Do you find that you are dragging your feet when you finally get home at the end of a long day? You get through the door and shut it behind you and don’t want to have to deal with anybody. You certainly don’t want to hear or see anything or anyone and what happens on the busy street outside should stay there. However, insulation might not be helping you with this quest, especially if you live in an older home. You may have to consider sealing a window or two at the very least.

You might find that you can hear people talking outside, those car doors opening and closing and even though this might not be a huge noise problem to you, it certainly suggests that you have other issues to think about. This is when you should definitely consider sealing a window or door, because leaking air is probably frittering away your hard-earned cash in terms of an increased energy bill.

When it comes to sound insulation, sealing a window at least, or even replacing it is the best approach. Even the smallest crack around the window can let in as much noise as the entire wall in which it rests. Your hard-earned cash in terms of your energy spend is also an issue.

Cracks can be filled in quite simply by a process known as caulking. This is certainly less costly than replacing doors or windows, or rebuilding structures wholesale. Even better, double glazing can keep noise in its place. Look for panes that are as thick as you can afford and establish as large a gap as possible between the glazing.

In bad cases, you can think about a major installation of filler or even an additional layer of drywall in between the existing wall layers. Don’t underestimate the cost here, however and also realise that it will be very intrusive.

If you have plain exterior walls, you might want to append some stucco which has been shown to block more noise than conventional siding. Of course, if a lot of your noise is caused by an institution such as an airport, it’s likely you can get local or federal grants to help you.

Unless you live close to a major highway or in some downtown location where things get rowdy on a Saturday night, noise may not be too much of an issue for you. However sealing a window should not be discounted, as if you could sense a draft then you know that you are in trouble. Your energy bill could be as much as 20% higher as a consequence of inaction.

Simple remedies may work the best when you are considering sealing a window or two in your home. Remember that noise issues can also lead to cold drafts and neither should come in between you and your level of comfort.

Prepare, Don’t Repair — The Super Absorbent

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

A leaking basement can be a major problem. Most homes built before the 1970s have minimum defense against this problem, unfortunately, although the good news is that your newer home is far better prepared. A damp basement can be caused by internal actions or man-made activities, or can be a result of water seeping in from the outside. Either way, you need to address this issue and not ignore it. You will need something with super absorbent properties to get rid of this dampness inside, as well.

Many people expect to smell that musty odor when they descend into a basement of a house. This is of course caused by the formation of mold and mildew and that very smell itself should cause alarm bells to go off. Remember that any dampness can get into the woodwork and the very structure of the house and cause deterioration or rotting.

Hydrostatic infiltration is a condition that forces water into the basement of a house from the surrounding terrain. It could be that there is a lot of ground water which is being forced under pressure up through the floor or through the walls. Of course, it could also be the result of poor drainage and blocked guttering outside and you should take action to clear this.

If you don’t have to deal with pooling water in the basement, you will inevitably have some kind of condensation in there and you will need a super absorbent product to help you to get rid of a lot of the dampness or condensation. This can be the case in other areas of the home as well. For example, differences in temperature and humidity levels can cause a lot of condensation on the inside of windows. When this runs down it can damage anything that might be nearby, unless you have used a super absorbent of some kind to protect.

Dehumidifiers can adjust the amount of moisture that you have inside your home. However, many people decide that they will place a super absorbent such as a hurricane sock in any areas that have a tendency to be problematic. A hurricane sock is, after all, proven in the worst of meteorological conditions to stop wind-driven rains from getting into your property, so it’s more than capable of looking after those occasional issues.

Suddenly, a nasty rainstorm can build up and cause water to start trickling into a home. This normally causes a blind panic for the homeowner, but all you need to do is to seek out and find those super absorbent hurricane sock products that you bought on the last occasion and that you have stored in your storage room. They are built to last, so they will be ready to go.

Sometimes, poor circulation leads to dampness and condensation building up in the home. If you find this to be a problem, look for the source of the issue. Remember that every home has a number of ventilation ducts and areas that must be kept clear. Get rid of those birds nests or whatever might be blocking and clear the issue in the long run. In the meantime, a super absorbent product can mop up the unwanted moisture in next to no time.

It’s impossible to keep moisture out of your home completely and indeed you want to be sure to have a certain amount of humidity anyway, as super dry conditions are not good for your health, or the health of your building, either. For all other situations, including those once in a blue moon pipe bursts or leaks, a product with super absorbent qualities is a must.

You Won’t Win The Award For Best Neighborhood Yard If Driveway Cleaning Has Been Ignored

Sunday, September 12th, 2010

Property experts tell us that first impressions count all the time, but we don’t really need to hear this. After all, we make subconscious assumptions the minute we first meet. Human beings tend to paint a picture in their mind in advance and will compare the real thing with the picture, inevitably.

It stands to reason that if you’re trying to sell your property, especially in these difficult times, you should make every effort to make sure that it is sparkling and clean. In short, you want to have that coveted “curb appeal” and the first place to start is with driveway cleaning. People tend to focus on the garden and the yard area, ensuring that they do not have any brown spots, while many times overlooking these important elements.

Driveway cleaning can take some preparation. If you have overlooked its maintenance for some time, you will undoubtedly have oil and tar spots, rubber deposits from the tires, those “overspray” areas, where you were touching up the side walls of your tires and so on. Chances are you will have cracks here and there and maybe even grass and weeds poking through.

You need to complete a full appraisal before you begin driveway cleaning. There’s no point in cleaning until you have taken care of those weeds and you should treat them with appropriate chemicals a few days in advance. When the weeds have gone, fill in and cover the cracks and don’t start cleaning until it is all cured.

Many of those oil deposits on the floor can be removed with cat litter, one of the favorite solutions. It’s very absorbent, of course, but you might still have to try this two or three times to get rid of the worst. If this doesn’t work, use a specially made chemical by all means, but avoid flushing it into the drainage system.

In spite of all your preparation efforts, you might find that you have problem areas in so many places that one of your final stages of driveway cleaning should be to seal everything with a coat of paint. Find solutions that are made specifically for concrete treatment and you can cover up the worst deterioration or weather damage.

Even if you’re not selling your property, driveway cleaning is a good idea, periodically. If your garage is full of stored items and you cannot park your vehicles within, you should get hold of one of those garage floor mats and place beneath your vehicles, overnight. These products come in fairly neutral colors, so won’t stand out like a sore thumb on your driveway. However, they will certainly help protect from those inevitable stains and spills.

There doesn’t seem to be any point in having the best yard in the neighborhood, if your driveway is a complete eyesore. Give driveway cleaning as much attention as you would your yard work.

Why We Forget Hurricane Preparedness When It Comes To Common Sense

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

The five-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and other devastating super storms teaches us to remember the destructive capacity of mother nature. We all tend to view our homes as our castles and feel secure within them. However, it doesn’t take long when one of those cyclones comes calling for us to see just how fragile our bricks and mortar castles really are. We need to be sure that our hurricane preparedness is top-notch and not only when those storms come into season.

If you don’t think that hurricane preparedness should be an extension of your common sense, just think of a couple of fairly recent freak weather events around the world. Nobody is immune to a catastrophe like this, but all of us tend to think that it should be somebody else’s problem. Remember also that water is by far the most devastating of mother nature’s weapons.

When a tropical cyclone hits, wind driven rains are the primary threats. Hurricane preparedness should center around a means of keeping intrusive water out. Sometimes these cyclones move at a very slow pace and unless you have made specific and special arrangements, the chances are that water will infiltrate your home and ruin some of your valuable possessions.

Do you know how difficult it can be to replace the carpet that has been damaged by flood water? It can be a major task, costly and extremely stressful. Unless you’re able to do it very promptly, you will quickly accumulate mold, which can then become extremely serious. If your hurricane preparedness has been lackluster and this situation arises, you may not be able to get in touch with experts who can help you immediately after the storm.

Maybe we skimp on hurricane preparedness because we live quite a long way from the ocean and think we are safe. Major storms can have other ideas and we only need to remember what happened with hurricane Wilma in South Florida a few years ago. Remember that this storm made landfall on the west coast of the state, yet the cities of Fort Lauderdale and Miami, almost 100 miles away, were very badly damaged.

Hurricane preparedness can begin with a line of defense against water around your doors and windows. A hurricane sock is purpose made for this job. It fits snugly around the bottom of Windows and doors and several of them can be used to defend your garage as well.

One of the best solutions known for absorbing water is polypropylene. Hurricane socks made of this product can be used over and again. All you will need to do is to squeeze them out over a sink or a drain very quickly, before putting them back into place.

You are essentially on your own if a major storm hits in your area. You won’t have time to run to the store to find supplies that you have overlooked. Not only do you need bottled water, canned food and flashlights, but you need a stock of hurricane socks to keep the worst of the weather at bay.

An older home may be more prone to these leaking window problems, especially as the seasons give way to bad weather and this may be a motivation to do something right now.

Weatherstripping can be purchased from your local do-it-yourself store when fixing drafty windows. You can also consider plastic film kits if you are ambitious. Window and door draft stoppers are definitely the simplest solutions, however as these do not require any effort to install or maintain.

If you choose weather stripping to help you overcome leaking windows, be sure that you prepare thoroughly, clean and dry before you move forward. Fit the weather stripping behind the sash and make sure it fits into the channel snugly, so that you will be able to open the window without any problem. You might have to use a utility knife or a hack saw to make sure that it is okay.

When fixing drafty windows, how important is access? Are you just concerned with fixing the problem, or do you want to be able to open and close the window after you are finished. Remember that you might need to do this for safety purposes, or to leave those cooling breezes in, in the future. Plastic window kits cover the entire window and can not be touched when finished.

If you choose plastic film for fixing drafty windows, clean this area thoroughly as you start working. Put backing tape in place and then cut the plastic film that overlaps the area you have prepared by at least 1 inch. A hairdryer can be used to warm the tape so that it shrinks and moves into place.

Don’t Waste Your Car Cleanup Efforts

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

The latest vehicle washing stations are really efficient and a testament to technology, aren’t they? You even feel as if you’re going on an adventure as you sit in the car and progress through the various stages. Not only do they do a great job on the paintwork, but they seem to be able to access those difficult to reach wheel areas as well, saving you a lot of fiddling about afterwards.

We seem to be always strapped for time and our automated vehicle washing places are excellent resources for us, making us feel proud of how our car looks again. Don’t forget, however, that there’s a lot more to keeping up the appearance of your vehicle and while it might look sparkling outside, you should make sure that you schedule a thorough car cleanup session to include the inside as well, on a regular basis.

The outside of the vehicle is only half of the problem, as a car cleanup should cover all the bases, inside and out. Don’t forget to think about the places to store it, as well. It’s a shame, in many respects, that we cannot automatically clean the inside of our car or truck as well, as this seems to be equally as tough a job!

When you come around to cleaning the inside windows on your car, you might be amazed at how you can see outside at all. They often seem to be dirtier than the external surface and the trick here is not to use conventional paper towel rolls, but to keep those old newspapers and use these instead. You’ll be amazed at the difference.

Think about all that junk that you accumulate inside your vehicle as time goes by. When you’re finished with your paper cup, you throw it behind the seat. Any old CDs and random receipts, you stuff in the glove compartment. Over time, you will be amazed how much excess weight you are carrying around, all of which is not doing much for your fuel economy, is it? Bring out the laundry basket from the utility room, fill it up with everything that’s in the car and take it back inside to sort through. Throw out the junk and store what you need to keep during this car cleanup session.

Once you have done a good job of cleaning out the inside of your car and vacuuming floors, invest in some car mats to save additional wear and tear on your carpets. You may not know, but it is prohibitively expensive to replace the carpet inside a typical vehicle and car mats are worth their weight in gold during your car cleanup session.

Don’t overlook the state of your garage, just because it is a utilitarian place. Invest a little bit of time and effort here by putting floor mats underneath each vehicle. This will make a great difference to the look of the room, as they absorb rainwater and other debris that would otherwise flow from the vehicle and could damage anything that you have stored in there.

It’s a job well done when you have finished your car cleanup, paid attention to the garage by installing garage floor mats. Now, don’t leave it until some indeterminate time in the future, but put this car cleanup regime on your calendar for the future.

Plastic Kit or Door Draft Stopper?

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

At this time of year, we seem to hear more and more questions about window insulation than during other periods. It seems that people are much more interested in the difference in temperature between the outside and the inside during this season. While air conditioning is very important, especially in our more tropical states, we pay more attention to creature comforts in the winter. This may well be something to do with our more positive frame of mind in the summer months, don’t you think?

When people ask us about window insulation, they normally want to know how easy or cost effective it would be to block those pesky drafts, that can be so annoying. They wonder whether they should buy one of those plastic insulation kits or put in place some door draft stoppers, which appear to be a lot easier.

Despite their name, door draft stoppers are equally adept at fixing a problem that might be in evidence around your window frame. As you only have two or three doors to worry about, remember that there are up to 25 or 30 windows in your home area.

It is said that a properly insulated home can be 20 to 30% more efficient than its unprotected counterpart in terms of keeping drafts at bay and saving your heating or cooling costs. If you look at the typical monthly utility bill and understand that the majority of the cost relates to your heating and cooling, you can see the potential.

When you get some rare time to sit down and enjoy yourself in your living room, there is nothing worse than having to deal with a pesky draft that is coming from somewhere. You will especially notice this problem on a windy day and will then realize that you have a significant problem. It’s just not acceptable to waste energy at all anymore.

A plastic, window insulation kit is all very well, but it is not easy to maneuver around if you want to get to a window to open it to allow a nice breeze to blow through. This is something that we look forward to in the spring and in the fall and don’t discount it.

A door draft stopper is the best solution from both a cost point of view of and for accessibility. If you fit the door draft stopper on all your doors and windows, they can be easily moved if you need to open the windows, during beautiful spring weather, for example.

While you have a number of windows and doors to think about, remember that you can pick up door draft stoppers in quantity, normally at a discount. The durable polypropylene products will keep your expensive conditioned air in place. Ground corn cob within is known to be the best insulator available.

A Draft Stopper is a Sustainable Aid

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

The chances are you may not have heard of the word sustainable. It’s not a buzzword anymore, as it is quickly becoming mainstream and something that you need to be concerned about. All the energy that we use is a precious resource now and we have to cut down on greenhouse gases emissions wherever we can. We cannot waste and must become sustainable. Energy use in our house must be contained.

You will need a number of draft stopper products to help you conserve energy at home, especially if your home is a little bit older. Truth be told that homes old and new tend to leak in one way or another and you will almost never be able to see with the naked eye where your problems arise. Nevertheless, you must take a close inspection and find out where air may be leaking and place a draft stopper wherever you suspect.

The draft stopper is a good investment in your drive for sustainability. We will all need to calculate our carbon footprints before long and politicians tell us we will have to pay to emit any carbon in the future.

Just imagine how motivated we will be when we have to start to pay for carbon emissions in addition to our regular energy costs. This is an incentive for us to pause and look at all our windows and doors to make sure the area is not leaking. They say that we will have to pay not only for the electricity used but also for the emissions in the form of greenhouse gases that are associated.

A number of options are available to help you fix a leak when you find it. Some of these can be expensive and difficult to achieve, while others can be rather straightforward. When it comes to leaks around windows and doors, the draft stopper is certainly one of the simpler solutions and can come in many different quantities as required.

As a draft stopper is made from polypropylene it will stand a lot of wear and tear. Ground corn cob is inserted within the product as it is known for its great absorbent properties. Any leaks you suspect will be stopped in their tracks.

Air conditioning and heating makes up for the largest amount of your utility bill and is the first area you should look at when considering money-saving options. A good amount of your conditioned air escapes due to leaks around windows and doors and most homeowners just simply do not pay attention to this.

Do your bit for the environment by learning as much as you can about sustainability. As you cut back, your pocketbook will also thank you and draft stopper products will be part of your answer.

Help Avoid Carbon Taxes — Fit a Door Draft Stopper

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

If you have a small business operation, you know how important it is to contain costs as much as possible. Your office space or work environment must be maintained to a certain temperature to allow your staff to function adequately and in certain jurisdictions you must maintain the settings according to statute. Quite apart from the comfort angle, you have to bear in mind the sheer cost of wasting energy in this tough economic climate.

A certain amount of pressure is bound to arise in the months and years ahead as legislators are now considering whether to impose a carbon tax. This would be designed to cause consumers and business owners to significantly cut back on energy use, due to greenhouse gas emissions.

The door draft stopper is an essential business owner’s asset, allowing energy use to be contained quite efficiently. Indeed, if used on all windows and doors it can help to reduce the total annual energy bill by as much as 25%! Remember that many implications are associated with energy use these days and purchasing a stock of door draft stoppers should be a high priority.

Every single building in existence leaks in one way or the other and just because you are in a new construction, you cannot ignore the issue. Buildings are almost impossible to insulate perfectly and waste can add up to be a big problem over time. In an older building, subsidence outside can affect the way the doors and windows fit into their original positions. The door draft stopper can be a very cost effective way to control this.

Governments may well implement a tax on businesses as they force them to cut down their energy use. The business owner must have a really good look at heating and air conditioning, which is almost always the largest part of the utility bill anyway. Leaking air can be stopped by fitting the door draft stopper around all doors and windows and will help to fend off the cost associated with this potential tax.

The most efficient door draft stopper can be put into place in any potential problem area. The small business or office owner knows that they may not be as pleasing to look at aesthetically, but this can be more than compensated for by the considerable amount of money saved and the positive effect on the environment.

Don’t worry about a door draft stopper wearing out as it is made of super strong polypropylene. In addition, it is filled with a great insulator, ground corn cob. Whenever a product like this gets wet, simply air dry it and use it again — it will last a long time.

You don’t want to mess with tape and film if you try and insulate your windows. What if you want to open them during warmer months to enjoy the cooler breeze. Be far more flexible by using a door draft stopper.

How to Put Money in Your Pocket With a Door Draft Stop

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Have you noticed how we all love to talk about the weather, especially the fact that it is so unpredictable? Only last week, we were using heating one day and air conditioning the next. Whatever option you currently have selected, you know that it is expensive and that you need to do everything you can to cut back on its use as we go into 2010.

The issue of energy efficiency is not going away anytime soon. Whenever we turn on our television or read the news we learn about new ways to curb carbon emissions and how each one of us must be responsible for the energy that we use. As such, we need to really concentrate on how much air conditioning or heated air we are loosing due to leakage and must consider options such as a door draft stopper to help slow this problem.

If you cannot see that you have a leaking air problem, it does not mean that you are getting away scot free. Just look at your utility bill and you will see that there is something wrong. Make an effort to go around each door and window and feel with your bare hands to see if you can locate any leaks. An open flame can sometimes be a handy tool to help you as well.

If you find that you have leaking air problems, you don’t have to panic and worry about major expenses such as replacement, rehanging of Windows or the installation of double glazing etc. These primary costs are rarely required, but you should investigate door draft stop products as a very cost efficient and sensible way to address the issue.

Any solution that you put in place to handle leaks must be able to last a long time. Potentially, these products will be in high-traffic areas and door draft stop products are made accordingly. The outside is fashioned from tough polypropylene, while the inside is filled with ground corn cob, one of the best insulators that we know of.

Every home has a leaking air problem, whether we choose to believe it or not. You need to look around all your windows, front and rear doors, basement doors, sliders to the patio and even attic doors. Each has the potential to cost you a lot of money if unchecked.

While you may be averse to buying anything right now, if you buy multiple door draft stop products and put them in place you will see a net return fairly soon. As they reckon that about 30% of an average bill is represented by wasted energy and leaking air, this is one of the first things that you can do, in addition to regulating thermostats inside.

Some might say that we’re too used to creature comforts, or are even lazy. Regardless, we all are used to artificially conditioned air within our homes and now expect this. Just take the time to ensure that you are not wasting.
