When It Comes To Installing Roller Shades

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

As a form of window shades, roller shades can add a large dose of style and taste to just about any window that is in need of a blind. Knowing how to install roller shades, then, can come in handy when the time has come to treat a window — no matter the room in the house — by installing one of several different types of roller shade into the window to not only block light but add style.

Generally speaking, there are three specific kinds of roller shade currently being made; the laminated roller shade, the suntone and the suntier. Of the three, the laminated roller shade is the most expensive. It is also a custom-made shade that features vinyl and cotton joined together through a laminating process. A mid-range model that isn’t extremely expensive is the suntier shade.

Regardless, installing any one of the three is pretty much the same. There are a few tools that are needed, but all are readily available from any hardware store or home improvement store. Assemble them before beginning the project. The first tool needed is a tape measure. Along with a tape measure, grab a pencil and a flat head and Philips head screwdriver, carpenter’s level and a quarter inch hex head.

After the tools have been assembled and made ready, the time will have come to take a look at the hardware that has been provided with each shade and then tried to get an idea of how it will all be fitted together to hang the shade. Common parts for most shades include a clutch, brackets, some sort of cord and the fabric for the shade. Not all shades will have all of the same parts, though.

Keep in mind that the screws that have been provided for the mounting brackets may not be appropriate for the material that the frame is composed of. For instance, if it’s a metal frame you’re going to need sheet metal screws and if it’s made of some sort of stone or concrete you’ll need to use a carbide drill in order to make the mounting holes. Additionally, you’ll need an anchor kit.

The next decision to make will be to decide whether or not the shade will be mounted inside the frame or outside. If it is going to be an inside Mount, make sure that the roller mechanism doesn’t come into contact with the top of the frame. Take care to mount all brackets inside and measure and level them carefully so that they are properly aligned and directly across from one another.

For an outside mount, make sure that the roller shade doesn’t make contact with the top of the window frame when raised or lowered. Make sure that you position the mounting brackets outside of the frame and that the brackets themselves are aligned and level with each other. The shade should move freely between the brackets and allow an additional 1/8 of an inch so that the roller mechanism can freely rotate.

Once the mounting hardware has been installed the only thing that will be left to do is to install the shades themselves. Make sure to go over the instructions for the shades and follow them closely, taking care to avoid over-tightening the rollers when attaching the clutch mechanisms and then mounting everything into the brackets. The window shades can quickly bring some style to just about any window.

How To Splash Color Onto Roller Shades

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Roller shades are different from standard windows. They are best used when a homeowner wants to decorate his or her room. It is easy to modify a room with style, texture and color when you are using window shades. Less money is used for interior design when shades are part of the room. Search for a supplier of shades in your location.

You will also find various grades of steel, ranging from mild to stainless, so you must choose carefully. If you want cheap window shades, then you must go for wood. Shades can be made according to the customer’s specification. Custom-made window shades often are more expensive than standard shades.

The good thing about custom-made window shades is that you add a personal touch to the window shades. This includes style, color and design. You also have to consider the installation options. Manual guides are often provided if the installation is complicated. Laminated shades, suntier and suntone are some of the popular shades in the market.

Roller shades are made for easy installation. The only problem is how to decorate them. If you are not a hands-on person, you will need a skilled designer for decoration. Specialists often do painting, but you can do it yourself at home. You just need to follow simple instructions. Painting is one way of enhancing your window shades. You must have tools for painting. You need a paintbrush, stamps, sponge brushes, paint, stencils and artist brushes. You can install a decorative shade pull as well.

Go to the suppliers and buy roller shades of the right dimensions.

Lay the window shades over a long and wide platform. A long table is suitable. You can use many tables to create a long table. You can also lay the shades on the floor if there is no long table.

The next thing is to draft a design for painting. There are many types of designs that you can come up with. More designs can be obtained from paint shops. When you buy paint, you must ask for a catalogue for painting styles. This will make your task easy. One of the most common designs is the sky theme.

Clean the background and make sure that it is free from dust. Begin painting the sky theme from the top of the shades. A midnight blue color is suitable. Paint in midnight blue until you are halfway from the bottom. When you are halfway, start painting in white color. Make sure that the transition fades from blue to white. The bottom part should be light blue, since your paintbrush is tinged with blue and white paint. Allow the surface to dry.

When the shade has dried, start painting the sun. Use yellow for the sun. You can draw the sun in the corner of the shade. If you want a perfect circle for your sun, use a circular lid. Using your paintbrush, draw around the lid to produce a circle. Next, you must draw the moon at the top of the shades. A crescent shaped moon can be drawn freehand.

You are almost done. It is time to touch up the surface. Your sky theme also needs clouds, so you will add clouds by simply swabbing the surface with a sponge. White color is good for clouds, but you can add a bit of grey to make if you want a natural look. The sky is not complete without stars. Add stars at the top of the shade and your theme is complete.

Allow your roller shade to dry. Fix the shade back in position. The interesting part about the sky theme is that if you put the sun, moon and stars at the right position, you will have the right feature showing at different times of the day. In the afternoon, the clear sky will show. At sunset or at night, the moon and stars will show. There are many themes available and you will have to decide which one is good for you.
