A brand new health care bill was introduced on May 11, 2009 by Senator Michael Bennett of Colorado that was supposed to advance patient care and reduce the amount of money being spent on health care. It is called the Medicare Transitions Act of 2009. This bill is designed to manage patient care by enabling the Medicare patients to get immediate intervention and follow-up services that are effective once they get out of hospital.
It is meant to provide the public with a national list of transition care providers within their communities. It is for giving care to Medicare patients who still need medical help even after leaving hospital up to the point when they would be able to take care of themselves.
The personal follow-up care would be availed to elderly patients too to enable them manage their conditions away from hospital but the medication to be ministered to them effectively.
This bill will reduce the cost of medical care and reduce the number of people who return to hospitals for readmission. Very many old people normally get caught up in this as one out of every five discharged from hospital each month get to return for readmission.
This number can be avoided with good follow-up treatment. There would be personal-follow up care in order to assess every patient’s situation and prescribe the valuable treatment or more instructions for self-care.

Is there a difference between a second hand stair lift and a reconditioned stair lift. Well a second hand unit is exactly what you get. Sold as seen so to speak. It’s very unlikely you will obtain a guarantee or warranty etc.
When you buy a reconditioned unit then the seller you purchased it from should have done a complete overhaul of the chairlift. The chairlift should have been stripped down and serviceable parts renewed.
Chairlift rollers bearings should be replaced. If the chairlift is AC electrical driven the T-Flex (Trailing Cable) should be replaced even if there are no signs of damage. If the chairlift is DC battery driven then a new set of batteries should be installed.
All moving parts should be lubricated to the manufacturers specification. The motor-gearbox should be checked and gearbox oil renewed. All electrical safety switches should be checked and renewed if there are signs of flash arcing on the contacts.
The OSG (Overspeed Governor) should be checked for correct operation and calibrated. On completion of the overhaul the unit will be rebuilt and the carriage is given a thourer cleaning or even re-sprayed to bring it back to its former glory.
It’s unlikely you will be able to buy a reconditioned stair lift of the shelf so to speak! Most companies will only offer supply and install package. Reconditioned stair lifts should come with some type of guarantee warranty this could be between six and twelve months. If you are looking at buying a reconditioned stair lift ensure the unit is less than five years of age.
Older stair lifts could present a problem! Sourcing spare parts etc. Ensure you ask the supplier that they supply you with a stair lift less than five years old. If they cannot guarantee this then find another company who can. Do some market research! Find a model you like the look of or a brand name someone has recommended etc. Ask the company if they can supply that same model reconditioned
Just don’t accept anything they offer you! There is a huge choice of models and suppliers to choose from so be fussy. At the end of the day you are a paying customer and should receive the same quality service and respect if you were buying a brand new chairlift

There’s no avoiding it. Your senior loved one can no longer live alone and the best thing for all involved is to move them to a senior living facility. Making that decision and communicating to the senior can be difficult and sometimes guild ridden. But once you have done it, the next hard part is finding the right facility. Do you know what questions to ask? Do you know what to look for? We have compiled a list of questions and danger signs to be on the look out for when you make your first visit.
So you just walked into a facility and your beginning your tour. What’s the first thing you should do? Take a deep breath and smell the air. How does it smell inside? Every reputable, well run facility should smell good, full stop. If it smells musty or like a bathroom, it could be an indicator of a serious problem. If you don’t like the smell don’t ignore it. Ask the manager why there is a smell. If you don’t get a reasonable answer or the manager wants to deny the smell, move on. There are plenty of other places to look at.
You’ve breathed in and the place smells good! Good news. Now the next observation should be with your eyes. How does the physical facility look? What is the condition of the place. It should be well maintained in every way. The place should be spotlessly clean. The furniture doesn’t have to be new but it should be in very good condition and inviting to use. The bathroom fixtures should be functional with no leaks. Paint on the walls should be clean and not be peeling. Look closely, if you see multiple problems, there is a problem with the way the facility is run. If the owners aren’t concerned enough with the day to day tasks of running the building how concerned will they be about the day to day tasks of caring for your senior.
The last item we are going to talk about are the caregivers who work there. Ask the manager if you can talk to one or two of them. Remember that these are the people who will have day to day contact with your loved one. Are they polite and gentle? Are they receptive to your questions? Do they speak english well? Its not discriminatory to inquire about this. Many caregivers are of foreign nationality and this is fine of course but if they cannot communicate well with you, how well will they be able to communicate with your senior? How long have they worked at the facility? A facility with a high turnover of caregivers means the caregivers aren’t happy working there. If they are not happy they won’t do as good of a job. How many caregivers are working there at any one time? A small facility of 6 residents should have 2 on staff at all times. If the manager refuses to let you talk to staff or shows resistance, this is a problem. They may be hiding something. Either get a good explanation or move on.
Finally, ask for references when the tour is over. Yes the names you will get will be cherry picked but if there are real problems at the facility even the cherry picked references might leak out some important information to you. Its worth doing.
We could go on and on with questions and other things to look for but if you enter with the mindset of imaging that it was you that would be living there, you are well on your way to making a good decision. If you discover issues that make your uncomfortable, they are probably issues with your senior. Keep your eyes open and ask questions and you will do fine.
