Many people wonder if there is a difference between the look and performance of real and faux wood blinds, or if the price tag is the only thing separating the two. There is a difference. Traditional wood blinds have a different weight to them than faux wood blinds, as well as different textures and patterns. Faux wood blinds are cheaper, but have less variety.
The question becomes, which blind to buy and why? Why spend more on wood if faux wood blinds look the same? For some people it’s a status symbol and others prefer the lightweight feel of real wood and the natural knots that occur in the design of wood. There is no right or wrong option when it comes to wood and faux wood window treatments. In the end, it’s a matter of preference and budget.
* Advantages of Faux Wood blinds
o Synthetic materials are cheaper than natural materials. They take less money to harvest and shape.
o Can be less resistant to warping and chipping than real wood blinds
o Are created to withstand moisture. These make bathrooms and kitchens a good place to install these blinds
o Only takes a few seconds once a week to keep them clean.
o Anti-static properties keep these blinds virtually dust free.
* Advantages of Real Wood blinds
o Allows the grain and knots in the texture to stand out, creating a unique blind every time.
o Generally has more variety in colors and textures
o Lighter in weight than faux wood blinds, so are better suited for big windows.
o In the past have been used more often by consumers for decorating homes.
Faux wood blinds are going to work best for those living on a budget. Their affordability and durability make them a great choice for a long-term investment. While they don’t look exactly like real wood blinds, the new choices are close enough that they will probably fool quite a few people. Faux wood blinds start around $20.00 per blind, making them an excellent investment for the cost.
Wood blinds on the other hand, have been made to withstand time. The type of wood and thickness will dictate how durable and how long lasting these blinds will be. Wood slat blinds enrich homes and businesses.
Shutters are a great way to bring wood into a design in unique way. While they are often associated with more old-fashioned designs, shutters can bring a freshness into a kitchen and make a room feel like it’s in the country instead of in the middle of a city.
Both regular wood and faux wood window treatments have their advantages and disadvantages. If it’s a matter of price, then faux wood is the way to go. If it’s a matter of style and status, then real wood is the only choice. Either way, you can’t go wrong.

All sorts of styles and designs are possible in window shade. The masses might just find it a drag, and make them accept one kind of design without exploring their options. Simplicity and warmth are personified by roller shades, and is now a part of interior design forever. Their flexibility in adapting to different kinds of decor makes them extremely trendy.
These shades are composed of a very basic design and work quite similar to a rolled up sheet of paper. Often made from a vinyl coated fabric, they have a mass of metal or plastic at the bottom to make the blind hang nice and smooth. Their design is functional and practical, and does not look too gaudy.
Roller shades are also far better than metal window shades. They don’t bend or split easily like metal window shades, and maintain the shiny look for many years. Their sharpness is lower too, and hence, they have a lower chance of harming your pets and/or children.
The quantity of illumination a shade filters is an important criterion. A shade is one of light filtering, decorative or blackout. Suitability of blackouts is high for bedrooms and rooms, which need privacy. They reflect every piece of light and keep the temperature of the room constant. They accomplish this complete darkness by lying flat on the window.
Mild filtering shades are suitable for a room you want illuminated only to a certain extent. These shades are usually transparent and allow you to enjoy the view. But at the same time, they block out UV rays and prevent the room from getting too hot.
Decorative window shades exemplify versatility. They come in different fabrics, textures, and operating styles. They mostly block only a certain amount of light, and may even diffuse the light to create a certain aesthetic effect. They focus on appearance rather than functionality.
The sub categories may be different, but the use remains the same, albeit to different degrees. What matters is the existing home decor and how it looks in the big picture.
The lift system is another thing to consider when you decide to buy one of these. The easiest to use and most popular is the spring clutch. There is no cord involved in this method. You just give it a little tug to release the clutch, and hold on to the bottom of the shade till it reaches the desired height. Bringing it down is easy as well. Just pull the shade down and let go. It will stay stationary until you give it a tug again.
Continuous cord loops are also another great safety method for lifting and lowering. Once the shade is up, you tie the bottom the cord to the wall or window frame and cord loops right through without hanging loose. One must pull the chord in opposite directions to lower or mount respectively.
All kinds of colors, sizes and shapes are provided with roller shades, which provide you with an inexpensive yet gorgeous choice for window shade. Hence, before you rush to buy the very first window style, think about all the shade types around and the make a thought-out decision.

Roller shades have a cylinder that causes smooth movement of the shade making it easy and fast to roll it in both directions. Usually these shades have a cord attached to it for the superior operation but with advancement in technology, a new touch system is in place that doesn’t require the cord.

Window treatments can come in many types and include different parts. Sometimes they are drapes with sheers beneath. Sometimes they are valances with false blinds that never move up or down. People often take for granted what window coverings can do and put little thought into their purchases. Curtains, blinds and roller shades actually serve many purposes, as varied as their styles.
Roller shades are a type of blind that are very functional. They come in a few different varieties. The different things they can do or provide to their owners demonstrate how important window coverings are. Roller shades range from thick materials to thin, and can be as practical as they are decorative. And like most window coverings, their purpose is best suited to the room or use they are intended for, rather than being a generic item added to a window.
Roller shades are called ‘roller’ because they roll up and away from the window, to the top. They typically have a roll situated at the top of the window that holds the rolled up shade. The shade is not pleated typically, although it can be, and does not gather up like roman or other types of blinds. Instead, a person pulls on the beaded chain and winds the shade back up. This chain can be attached to the wall to keep it safe for smaller children and out of harm’s way.
Shades come in all sorts of various materials. Some materials are thick, and others are surprisingly thin. Some companies also offer eco-friendly textiles that support a friendly ecology for the earth while still being inexpensive to purchase. Blinds are typically custom made to fit a window. However, many online stores have ready-made blinds waiting in stock to be sold. Be sure to get accurate measurements when choosing blinds.
Media rooms in today’s family home often require a great deal of privacy or darkness but only at certain periods, such as when people are watching movies or playing video games. Otherwise, it’s nice to have natural light in. Room darkening window shades are meant to block all light from a room. They also keep rooms the most private. That is why many hospitals and doctors choose these blackout or room darkening roller shades for their own use. These light-blocking shades can also help keep the slow setting sun out of young children’s windows when their bedtimes come sooner than the darkness. They’re ideal for any bedroom really, as they do not have to be black. Blackout blinds can be of any color and can come in fun textures like faux suede.
Some rooms don’t require having the entirety of natural light blocked out from their windows. Natural lighting is a good way to save on electricity bills, choosing to use the light from outside rather than light bulbs or electrical lamps. For rooms like this, it might be better to have light controlling roller shades. These window shades or blinds are usually made from transparent materials. It’s even possible to make homemade blinds out of rice paper that will last for quite some time. Some light controlling shades are so thin that it’s as if they weren’t there at all. Others are so opaque that they look like part of the wall, letting no view from outside through the window but every ounce of light into the room.
Roller shades can serve other purposes as well. As was mentioned, some shades can have pleats. The pleats trap air between bits of the shade and depending on the weather, help to cool or heat a room. Some sheer window shades are meant to only keep the glare off of things like televisions, while still letting a maximum amount of natural lighting in. Other shades are UV protectors, keeping furnishings inside the house from fading due to sunlight exposure. And ultimately, some shades are just for decoration, placed as compliments to curtains and drapes, and edged with scalloped trim or fringe.
Like other types of window coverings, roller shades come in a vast array of styles and purposes. Blinds and window furnishings show their intended purpose often by what they are made of or how they are styled. The thicker treatments are for room darkening, wrapping a room in a cocoon of privacy and excluding light from outside. Thinner blinds are for light control. Whichever purpose a person is buying blinds for, it’s important to know why they are choosing one style or another. Intention is everything.

As a form of window shades, roller shades can add a large dose of style and taste to just about any window that is in need of a blind. Knowing how to install roller shades, then, can come in handy when the time has come to treat a window — no matter the room in the house — by installing one of several different types of roller shade into the window to not only block light but add style.
Generally speaking, there are three specific kinds of roller shade currently being made; the laminated roller shade, the suntone and the suntier. Of the three, the laminated roller shade is the most expensive. It is also a custom-made shade that features vinyl and cotton joined together through a laminating process. A mid-range model that isn’t extremely expensive is the suntier shade.
Regardless, installing any one of the three is pretty much the same. There are a few tools that are needed, but all are readily available from any hardware store or home improvement store. Assemble them before beginning the project. The first tool needed is a tape measure. Along with a tape measure, grab a pencil and a flat head and Philips head screwdriver, carpenter’s level and a quarter inch hex head.
After the tools have been assembled and made ready, the time will have come to take a look at the hardware that has been provided with each shade and then tried to get an idea of how it will all be fitted together to hang the shade. Common parts for most shades include a clutch, brackets, some sort of cord and the fabric for the shade. Not all shades will have all of the same parts, though.
Keep in mind that the screws that have been provided for the mounting brackets may not be appropriate for the material that the frame is composed of. For instance, if it’s a metal frame you’re going to need sheet metal screws and if it’s made of some sort of stone or concrete you’ll need to use a carbide drill in order to make the mounting holes. Additionally, you’ll need an anchor kit.
The next decision to make will be to decide whether or not the shade will be mounted inside the frame or outside. If it is going to be an inside Mount, make sure that the roller mechanism doesn’t come into contact with the top of the frame. Take care to mount all brackets inside and measure and level them carefully so that they are properly aligned and directly across from one another.
For an outside mount, make sure that the roller shade doesn’t make contact with the top of the window frame when raised or lowered. Make sure that you position the mounting brackets outside of the frame and that the brackets themselves are aligned and level with each other. The shade should move freely between the brackets and allow an additional 1/8 of an inch so that the roller mechanism can freely rotate.
Once the mounting hardware has been installed the only thing that will be left to do is to install the shades themselves. Make sure to go over the instructions for the shades and follow them closely, taking care to avoid over-tightening the rollers when attaching the clutch mechanisms and then mounting everything into the brackets. The window shades can quickly bring some style to just about any window.

Roller shades are a great option for your home. You have the choice of many different fabrics and styles. The possibilities are endless. If you want the room darker or lighter, then this can be accomplished by choosing different material. Whatever you choose, these window shades are very practical and easy to use.
Since roller shades are very inexpensive, they make it an economical way to decorate your home. Blinds and curtains can get pricey, especially if you are buying both for your windows. Roller shades are like curtains and blinds in one. So you will save some money if you go with this option instead.
How do you find the type of roller shades that will work in your home? There are a few factors to consider when choosing the right window shades. Do you have children? The many different types of fabrics offer different benefits. Some are kid proof; so if this is your goal, make sure to get a material that the kids won’t destroy.
If you just want a shade that doesn’t provide much privacy, then the Sheer roller shade is the option for you. Most of the light will still get through this type, but it is a great decorative shade that will add to any room. Your room will still be very well lit with these sheer window shades.
To provide you with a little darker room, you may want to turn to the Semi Sheer material. These let in less light than the Sheer option, but they still allow you to make out shadows of items outside. They give you some additional privacy but make your windows look great.
If your goals with your window treatments are to provide a good amount of privacy, then the semi-opaque shades are the right option for you. These roller shades will darken your room much more so than the two previous materials. You will only make out vague shadows and most of the light will be blocked out of your room. This is a good option for any home.
Blackout window shades are great if you want 100% privacy and no light coming in. With the vinyl-backed material of these window shades, you will get just that. The edges of the window, where the shades may not cover, will be the only light present with these blackout shades.
Lift control is a feature of the roller shades. Some even come with cordless lift control. With the touch of a button you can control these window shades. Kids and animals will not be able to mess with the cord because there isn’t one.
If you do have the motorized window shades, you probably also have the option of the reverse roll. This could create a different look to your shade by rolling it up in the opposite direction. Give it a try and see for yourself.
Another great feature of roller shades is they offer UV protection. Depending on how sheer the material you choose, you can get between 75% and 95% of protection from harmful UV rays.
There are so many possibilities when it comes to roller shades. You can browse online looking through all the options. Whether you are going for style or functionality, there is a roller shade out there that is just right for you.
